There will never be the perfect time (Creepy Van Story)
There will never be the perfect time for anything. I talk to a lot of people that want to change their life. For some of those that I talk to, it actually happens. But there are the few that still may need a little more time, or are unsure.
When I started CrossFit I had no intention of becoming who I am today, it just happened. I think it happened because I gave it a chance. When I moved to San Diego for the Navy, I had befriended someone that no one else wanted to talk to. From our peers, this guy was seen as one of the weirdos. He drove one of those vans that had the curtains on the windows. But I was able to talk to him and decided to give friendship a chance.
The first thing that we did as new friends, was to ride his van to check out his super awesome gym. Afterward, we went to get a California burrito (they are great by the way). That day I fell in love with both the gym and that burrito. That day started my CrossFit journey, and I have never looked back. I’m so glad that I gave it a chance. I’m glad that I got uncomfortable. I’m glad that I actually stepped out of my shell, which was very unlike me at the time, and took the chance.
Fast forward years of training, workouts, and coaching. I was supposed to have a meeting the other day with a potential new athlete. This person didn’t show up. During that meeting, we were going to talk about their specific goals and see if Faction would be a good fit or not. Long story short, I got an email saying that “I don’t think I’m ready now, it is not the perfect time. Thank you anyways.” Normally in that situation, I’ll just wave it off and maybe see you later. But they got me thinking, and it is why I’m writing now.
I don’t think that there will ever be the perfect time for anything. I used to feel that way years ago, but my experiences have shown me that I was very wrong. From then I have change careers, gotten married, bought a house and had kids. All of these life-changing events have been, and I mean every one of them, have been at an imperfect time. The stars never perfectly aligned, I never had enough money, and was never fully ready.
But I took a chance and trusted the process. I took the chance with all of these major decisions, even stemming back to when I started CrossFit, and I have absolutely no regrets. All these decisions have changed my life to the amazing thing that it is now. I am very fortunate to wake up every day and think, holy moly this is an awesome journey!
The truth is that if you are considering any type of change, there will never be a perfect time for anything. I would advise you not to wait until the time is right, or whatever that means, because it never will be. My advice may change over the years but as it stands right now this is what I can tell you.
Walk without fear. Being NOT OK is OK. You do not have to be comfortable all the time. You do not have to have everything figured out. I’m sure that if everything were perfect then you and I would probably be bored out of our minds. Stress and fear make us who we are, it can actually drive us to make decisions that take you to the next level in your journey.
I’m not telling you to do what I have done, what I am telling you to do is not get caught up in being OK with not taking chances. Times will be hard but they will shape you to be better. Embrace change and learn from your failures.
